Tania Wati

Voice of her Community

It’s impossible to peg Tania down to one specific box. She’s a woman who wears many hats – including but not limited to; the Kaihautū/ CEO of Mahaanui Kurataiao, the Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Representative on the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Governance Board, the Chair of Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga and as the Chair of Whitiora, a brand new hapū led, iwi backed skills centre, designed to support the economic recovery within the Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri takiwā.

Tania can whakapapa to both Ngāi Tahu (Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Ngāti Kurī) and Ngā Puhi. She is fearlessly committed to her Rūnanga and iwi and has spent most of her career working in different areas of ‘iwi-proximal industry’. 10 years ago, she moved herself and her two sons to Christchurch to take up the role of kaiawhina for Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga. Her approach to work is to begin by listening at the feet of her kaumatua, and working from the ground up. In her mahi, she strives to ensure that the voice of her community is heard at all levels. Ngā mihi, Tania.
